About the Role

We are collaborating with a leading renewable energy developer in the APAC region that is rapidly expanding. They are seeking a Project Engineer to lead the technical design and support evaluation of commercial and utility-scale wind projects. This position is based in Tokyo and will require proficiency in Japanese.



Responsibilities

  • Cross-functional Collaboration

    • Drive outcomes by working with teams across Tokyo and Chicago, including engineering, project development, C&I energy markets, finance, environmental, and GIS teams, to support project development, offtake, financing, and permitting.
    • Ensure smooth transfer of technical responsibilities to project management and operations teams through to commercial operation.
  • Technical Due Diligence

    • Lead the preliminary technical evaluation of potential wind energy projects.
    • Interpret and apply relevant codes and standards in both Japanese and English.
  • Site Characterization and Layout Design

    • Coordinate site studies with experts, evaluate constraints, and design optimized project layouts using GIS software.
    • Design and analyze site measurement campaigns, establish long-term resource characteristics, and deploy meteorological equipment.
  • Energy Production Modeling

    • Model expected energy production and key metrics using software such as Windographer, Openwind, MASCOT, and RIAM-COMPACT.
  • Wind Farm Certification

    • Work with consultants, suppliers, and permitting agencies to obtain wind farm certification.
    • Support pre-construction efforts, including site plans, electrical collection cable and access road siting, and geotechnical investigations.
  • Site Visits and Stakeholder Engagement

    • Conduct site visits for evaluation and wind turbine micrositing.
    • Participate in landowner meetings, community outreach events, and construction meetings.
  • Turbine Technology and Market Trends

    • Maintain knowledge of wind turbine technology and trends.
    • Collaborate with OEMs to optimize equipment selection for projects.
  • Post Prediction Assessment

    • Conduct post prediction assessments using operational data and update in-house prediction tools.


Requirements

  • Proactive and can-do attitude.
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in renewable engineering and wind analysis software (e.g., MASCOT, RIAM-COMPACT, Windographer).
  • Experience with permitting agencies (e.g., ClassNK, METI).
  • Direct report management experience with mentoring and coaching abilities.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Advanced or proficient level of Japanese (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, renewable energy, statistics, atmospheric science, mathematics, physics) or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to travel.


Preferred Skills

  • Advanced or proficient level of English (listening, speaking, reading, writing).
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Field work experience.
  • Master's degree or MBA.
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics.
  • Advanced programming skills (e.g., Python).
